audience engagement tips Jun 11, 2026

Hey Pod Pals!
This newsletter was lovingly curated (without the use of any AI) in real time on Thursday morning at 9:13am CST.
My morning fitness routine has been completed.
The kids have been fed.
I've already plunged our toilet once (thanks Henry!).
Time to write the newsletter!
Today we are going to have a little chat about your audience engagement.
Not getting enough audience engagement is probably the thing I hear most podcasters complaining about these days...
so the first thing I want to do is attempt to define what audience engagement actually is.
Sometimes podcasters think audience engagement and episode downloads are the same thing and I would respectfully disagree.
To me, audience engagement means that your audience takes an action step that you ask them to take like subscribe to your email list, comment on a social media post, or join you for a webinar.
So...Why does your audience engagement suck?
To help you solve this riddle I've created a new framework that I call The Audience Attention Pie Chart.
To apply this framework you have to start thinking about your content through the lens of your content consumer.
Question: In your most recent episode, from start to finish, how many things did you ask your audience to do?
Here's a short list of common CTA's (call to action) that many podcasters give on almost every single episode:
➡️ Subscribe to my show.
➡️ Leave a rating and review.
➡️ Follow me on (insert social media channels here)
➡️ Share this episode with a friend.
➡️ Download my freebie.
➡️ Buy my offer.
➡️ Book a discovery call.
➡️ and buy things from my sponsors or use my affiliate link.
If you were to include ALL of these CTA's in an episode your Audience Attention Pie Chart would look like this:

The more sections we have dividing up our pie chart, the less likely it is that our audience will take ANY action at all.
Now let's consider this:
👉 Most podcast listeners listen to at LEAST three shows per week.
So really, the above image only represents the amount of things that YOU are asking them to do with every episode.
When we 2-3x the amount of CTA's that our listeners are experiencing across ALL of the shows they are listening to...it's easier to understand why they aren't taking any action at all.
So, here's the simple CTA formula that is going to help you stand out and get your audience to take some action for once:
➡️ Simplicity + Consistency.
With every episode I want you to start asking yourself this question:
What is the SINGLE call to action, that if your audience were to actually take it, it would have the greatest overall impact on your brand and your business?
Whatever it is that you come up with should be your ONLY call to action for that episode and you should mention it at least twice.
Let's say that you decide that your most important CTA is for your audience to sign up for a discovery call.
Your Audience Attention Pie Chart should look like this:

and....you should repeat this as your singular CTA for several episodes in a row.
Personally I only have three CTA's that I focus on (one at a time):
➡️ Sign up for a discovery call.
➡️ Sign up for my newsletter.
➡️ Buy a new thing I'm promoting.
So...for any of my Pod Pals that have been feeling your feelings about not getting any audience engagement here are some specific action steps for you:
✔️ 1. Decide on your SINGLE most impactful CTA that you want to use right now.
✔️ 2. Use this as your SINGLE CTA for the next 4-12 episodes of your show in a row.
* For those of you that have a canned intro/outro you may have to get rid of them if they include CTA's...these still count!
Let's end with a quick story:
A few years back I was launching a brand new offer and I felt REALLY good about it.
I knew it solved a problem that my audience had and I was confident that my pricing was on point.
I made this my single CTA on my podcast and....NOBODY bought it for the first 11 weeks of episodes...
and then....
in week 12 it went NUTS and I made over $10,000.
😎 Simplicity + Consistency for the WIN 😎
📌 Last thing for today:
I've got TWO free Content Collaboration sessions on the calendar for June 16th & 30th.
This is a GREAT opportunity to network with other podcasters and find guests or find shows that you can be a guest on.
Talk to you next week!
Your Pod Pal,
Adam
