    Hey Pod Pals!

This newsletter was lovingly curated (without the use of any AI) in real time on Thursday morning at 8:42am CST.

I just dropped off my son at school and I'm slowly sipping my cold brew coffee.

We are in our last two days of the school year here in Missouri. I can't believe that Henry will be in high school next year....it's CRAZY!

I feel the cold brew coffee kicking in....time to write!

This week we are going to talk about a very much overlooked part of most podcasters content strategy: Strategic Interviews.

I hate seeing podcasters out there flying by the seat of their pants and just letting anyone on their show in order to keep up their content cadence.

It's time to do BETTER Pod Pals!

So, moving forward from today, you will have a game plan for strategic interview content.

First, let's address the gorilla in the room...I know what many of you are thinking:

"Adam...aren't you the guy that tells us to STOP doing so many interview episodes???!"

👉 This is correct Pod Pals....but I'm not telling you to do ZERO interviews.

If one of the goals of your podcasting efforts is to build an audience and then convert those audience members into becoming paying clients then I suggest that you use my 2/3 Content Rule for Expert Positioning.

⭐️ This states that 2/3 of your podcast content should feature YOU as the expert with: Solo episodes & Coaching episodes.

We still have that other 1/3 of your content and I want you to use THAT for strategic interviews.

Now...all cards on the table....my current interview content is 25% of my overall content with a consistent cadence of:

    ➡️ Week 1: Solo episode

    ➡️ Week 2: Coaching episode

    ➡️ Week 3: Solo episode

    ➡️ Week 4: Interview episode

So the general rule of thumb is: Do fewer interview episodes BUT make them REALLY count!

Before we dive into strategic interviews...let's bust a couple of podcasting myths:

📌 Myth #1: Having famous people on your podcast is a GREAT way to grow your audience.

This is absolutely false and we have to realize that any guest that comes on our show is ultimately hoping to scoop up a portion of our audience and add it to their audience.

They aren't coming on our show to be a part of our podcast growth/promotion team.......it's just the truth Pod Pals!

📌 Myth #2: In order to be a guest on OTHER people's podcasts we have to do a lot of outreach to inquire about being a guest.

🙋‍♀️ Raise your hand if you are a podcaster that is SICK of getting SPAMMY emails every day with podcast pitches!!!

"Hello (insert podcaster name here)...I love your show....(insert podcast name here)....and I have a world famous dentist that would be a PERFECT guest for you! He's got over 2 billion followers on MySpace that he will share your interview with!!!!"

I've been a guest on about 500 podcasts over the past 10 years and I've NEVER asked to be on a show.....how do I do this?....

👉 I leverage strategic interviews on my show....aka...I invite people onto my show FIRST!

So my goal is to leverage 25% of my overall content to create connections with podcasters that I want to explore further collaboration opportunities with.

Here's the exact checklist I use when I'm looking for my next guest on Podcasting Business School:

✔️ 1. They must have a podcast that I would be an ideal fit for.

✔️ 2. They must be actively building an email list.

✔️ 3. They must have at least one strong social media platform.

✔️ 4. They cannot have services that directly compete with mine.

Now...where do I look for these podcasters?

My first stop is the Apple Podcasts and Spotify Top 200 rankings lists. I look in the business/entrepreneurship category rankings.

I typically search in the 150-200 ranking range as those podcasters are MUCH easier to contact.

I find some prospects and I listen to their content. If I feel good about it I use my checklist from above and then reach out and invite them to be a guest on my show.

🚨 Now this next step is REALLY important...Pay Attention Pod Pals!

If they agree to come on my show I have some specific questions I ask them during their onboarding process:

    1. I ask about email list collaboration opportunities and if I could sponsor their newsletter.

    2. I ask if they are open to affiliate/referral opportunities.

    3. I ask if they are interested in having me on their show to speak about how to leverage a podcast to get more clients.

    4. I ask if they would be interested in going live on their social media platform of choice to promote our episode together.

I frame the above questions as a "Check all that apply" checklist...so it's super low pressure.

Now let's talk about some post-interview goals that we would like to achieve:

✔️ 1. They invite you to come on their show as a guest.

    ✔️ 2. They become a client.

    ✔️ 3. They become a referral/affiliate partner.

✔️ 4. They let you sponsor their newsletter.

✔️ 5. They want to do a free newsletter or email list promo swap.

✔️ 6. They schedule a livestream on their favorite social media platform to promo your episode together.

✔️ 7. They invite you to speak at a live/virtual event they are hosting.

If we can check off at least one of these with each interview great things will start happening for your audience growth and your business.

As you get more dialed in with your strategic interview process you will be able to check off multiple post interview goals and create explosive growth and high value relationships.

Here's an example of how I did this with my Pod Pal Amanda Walker of the Best Damn Coach podcast....(shout out to Amanda...she reads my newsletter!)

I invited Amanda onto my show as a guest on October 24th, 2023 for episode 417 of Podcasting Business School.

    Since this interview:

🎯 We've been on each other's shows multiple times.

🎯 We've referred business to each other.

    🎯 We are affiliate partners.

🎯 We have done promotional livestreams together on Instagram.

    🎯 We've been in a mastermind together.

🎯 We are doing an email list promo swap.

🎯 We buy each other's programs.

So to wrap up this deep dive.... I want you to start getting strategic with EVERY interview you do.

🛑 Stop creating these episodes that end up being one off throw away experiences.

✅ Start planting relationship seeds that blossom into huge opportunities for collaboration, monetization, and brand growth!

One of my favorite parts of my Online Business Academy for Podcasters is that I host Vetted Collaboration Meetups where I'm able to introduce my clients to podcasters I know with large audiences.

With these sessions I'm able to facilitate high value connections and MANY strategic interview opportunities for my members.
