podcast growth Aug 23, 2023
Over the past 7+ years of my podcasting journey I've been on a quest to grow my podcast and I feel like I've tried just about everything....yeah.....I was that guy at Best Buy subscribing all of the display phones and iPads to my podcast......LOL! #GrowthHack!
It's been a long and difficult journey to crack the podcast growth code so it's pretty cool that as I sit and write this we are about 1,300 downloads away from hitting 400,000 downloads for Podcasting Business School. I'm now also over one MILLION downloads for all of my shows combined........that's WILD!
I'm also really proud that I've taken two shows in two totally different podcasting niches (health and business) over that 400,000 download mark!
All that being said.....today I want to get YOU focused on three strategies that have ALWAYS worked for me as I attempt to grow my podcast.
β Strategy #1: Use my 72 Hour Marketing Method. I talk about this a lot on my show but I still meet a lot of podcasters that put out a lot of content but never tell anyone about new episodes or give their followers a reason to listen in.
Don't be that person! Instead I want you to create FIVE unique marketing assets for each episode you release and then put them out there within 72 hours of when the episode goes live.
Example: If your episode goes live on a Monday morning you could do something like this:
Monday AM: Carousel multi image post with four top takeaways from your episode.
Monday PM: Livestream to do Q&A with your audience or cover a topic related to your episode topic.
Tuesday AM: Write an email blast to your list with some bonus content that is related to the episode topic.
Tuesday PM: Share a 60-90 second highlight video clip from the episode on social as an IG Reel, TikTok video, etc.
Wednesday AM: Share another video or carousel post with some tips or bonus thoughts on the episode topic.
β Strategy #2: Start buying podcast player app banner ads. These are SO EASY and they always get you new subscribers. I wish I knew about platforms like Overcast.FM back in 2015!
All you have to do is pick which category you want to advertise in and then pay for it.....BOOM.....you've got a banner ad running for the next month.
Here's a quick pro tip for banner ads on Overcast: Don't just run ads in your specific podcast category. Try to find other podcast categories that your ideal listeners listen to and run ads there also.
Example: For Podcasting Business School I know that a lot of my listeners listen to News and True Crime podcasts so I advertise in those categories. I've got an ad in the News category on Overcast right now and it's killing it!
β Strategy #3: Be a guest on other people's podcasts. I've been a guest on well over 100 podcasts just in the last couple of years and here's the cool part: I've never ever pitched anyone to be a guest on their show.
There are so many super expensive PR agencies that are willing and ready to charge you thousands of dollars to get you booked on shows and I'm here to tell you that there is a much simpler and more cost effective way to get booked on a ton of high level shows as a guest.
