⭐️ This week we are going to talk about how I prioritize which business project I'm going to focus on next.
So if you have been a podcaster/content creator for even just a few weeks you definitely realize that there is an internal drive to do "all the things all at once".
With so many things that we could be doing for our business it's important to have a set process to help us figure out which thing (singular) to do before everything else.
Here are three steps that I use as a filter to make sure that I'm making an informed decision as to how I spend my time as I grow my business:
✅ Step #1: I have a Google Sheet set up where I track my top ten projects that could potentially move the needle for my business. This simple list takes a lot of pressure off of me mentally because I know I won't forget my latest and greatest idea.
I do limit this list to just TEN so if this list is full my latest idea has to be better than something else on the list. As I've matured in my career as an online entrepreneur I've been able to weed out the not so great ideas and my list is usually in the 5-7 range. I've got seven projects on my list currently....in case you are wondering.
✅ Step #2: I use the "One Thing" question. The book The One Thing is my favorite business book of all time because it helps me prioritize what ONE THING I should be focusing on. So once you have the top ten project list from Step #1 we need to look at the list and ask ourselves "What is the ONE PROJECT that if completed first has the greatest overall impact on my business?".
By focusing 100% of my energy on one single high impact project I'm able to knock it out quickly verses working a little bit on several projects at once. In case you are wondering....my current top project is launching my new podcast. This is a very high impact project because I will be able to create/sell a new online course and write a book all based off of this new content.
✅ Step #3: I use "The Road Less Stupid" questions. Another sneaky good business book is The Road Less Stupid by Keith Cunningham. I'm sure many of you have read the book Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki...well...Keith Cunningham is Robert's "rich Dad".
There are a lot of great business and life tips in this book but my top takeaway is a series of three questions to ask ourselves when we are deciding what to focus on. I use these three questions as a final filter to make sure I'm putting my energy into the correct project.
Question 1: What is the upside of focusing on this project?
Question 2: What is the downside of focusing on this project?
Question 3: Can I live with the downside if I don't focus on this project right now?
Once I go through this three step process I know I'm focusing my energy on the correct project and then I put my head down and get to work!
Now in Step #2 above I mentioned that I will be creating a new podcast and turning it into a book. That idea was inspired by the conversation I had with my Pod Pal Elikqitie on episode 381 of the podcast. Check it out!
