When I first started podcasting in 2015 I thought this is how it all worked:
🚀 Launch a podcast
😎 Interview fancy/famous people
💰 Get sponsorships, become wealthy, and buy a Lambo with a license plate that says PODCSTR.
Well...I'm here to tell you that it didn't work out like this for me and it doesn't work out like this for most podcasters.
I wanted to have a podcast that helped me earn meaningful income....but doing interview episodes and chasing sponsorships only paid me a total of $37 over my first three YEARS.......not a great result!
My problem was that I was making two incorrect assumptions that most podcasters make when we first get started:
➡️ We assume that podcast content = interview episodes.
➡️ We assume that podcast monetization = sponsorships.
I didn't realize that by focusing on interview episodes I wasn't positioning myself as THE expert on my own show.
I also didn't realize that most podcast sponsors want to work with shows that are doing at LEAST 5,000 downloads per episode....
AND they are only going to pay you between $18-$25 for every 1,000 downloads!
So let's do a quick recap of my first five years trying to make money as a podcaster:
Years 1-3: I earned a total of $37.00
But by the end of year five I had replaced my income and went full time into podcasting.
The appropriate question you should be thinking is:
➡️ What did you do in year four and five?!!!!
The answer: I developed my 2/3 Content Rule and I finally started selling my own programs and services to my audience.
My 2/3 Content Rule states that we must focus on developing expert positioning within our own content by making sure that at least 2/3 of our episodes feature ourselves as THE expert.
This is accomplished by doing:
✔️ Solo podcast episodes
✔️ Coaching podcast episodes (where you invite a listener or client onto the show and coach them).
Please note that this strategy still allows for up to 1/3 of your content to be interview episodes.
Once I started applying the 2/3 Content Rule it was as if I'd waved a magic wand and people started to buy my offers.
💰 I did a paid group challenge and made $3,000+
💰 I raised my prices and did the challenge again and made $14,000+
💰 I was getting 1:1 coaching clients.
💰 I built a membership offer that people were paying me $97/month to be a part of.
I was FINALLY earning meaningful income to the point where it made sense to go full time into content creation by the end of year five!
So....should YOU stop doing interview episodes?
Probably not...BUT if you currently aren't able to leverage your content to get new clients and sell your own programs/services I would highly suggest backing down your interview content to 1/3 of your episodes.
Need some help with applying my 2/3 Content Rule so you can start turning your content into new CLIENTS?
I'd love to work together inside my Podcast Content To Clients Workshop coming up on April 21st-24th.......it's just $47.00 and we are going to spend an entire day on optimizing your 2/3 Content Rule strategy.

🤩 Client Testimonial of the week: My client Kari Jo Patterson has a show called the Esthetician podcast.
Check out what she has to say about doing 1:1 consulting with me:
"By working with Adam I now actually have systems in place and I'm turning my listeners into coaching clients! The biggest change I've seen so far is getting back my time freedom. I used to spend hours per day on social media and now my podcast content does all the heavy lifting for me. If you are overwhelmed and need some help, you need to hire Adam!"
