This week we are going to talk about why your clients aren't buying from you right now.
Let's kick things off with a story.
The year is 1988 and I was a money motivated eight year old with a sweet mullet (with the shaved in stripes on the side of my head).
I was always cooking up ideas to make some side cash but THIS felt like my best idea yet....here was my plan:
➡️ Step One: Assemble my crew.
➡️ Step Two: Make homemade cards with our sweet art skillz.
➡️ Step Three: Sell them to every sucker on the block.
➡️ Step Four: Be the kid that owns the best Huffy bike in the neighborhood.
So I got my crew together:
Ryan... the older man (9 years old) that brought seasoned marketing skills and LOTS of energy (later diagnosed as ADHD).
Todd.... Ryan's brother. Not my first choice but they were a package deal.
Matthew... my neighbor who I shared a fence with... through which we shared many great ideas. He also had a mode of transportation....a Big Wheel bike!
Lil' Steven... Matthew's younger brother (6 years old)...but the kid had major swagger and he was the only one of us that had a girlfriend...so an obvious fit for heading up the romance card division.
Avengers ASSEMBLE!
On the first day Todd showed up without Ryan because he said his brother had "head lights"....aka head LICE....so he couldn't leave the house.
Damn.....already down a man!
Regardless...we gathered at my house and started cranking out homemade cards:
"Happy Birfday" 🎂
"I luuv U" 💕
"Will you merry me?" 💍
"Happy St Patrick's Day!" 🍀
Next we divided up our territory and went out to SELL!
Unfortunately I had a bad draw because my territory included a house that we ALL avoided...Mark's house! 😱
We weren't sure how old Mark was, but here is what we did know:
-He looked just like Dee Snider the lead singer of Twisted Sister.
-He played his drums ALL DAY long. You could hear them throughout the entire neighborhood.
-Our moms all told us he was a devil worshipper.
-Rumor had it that he burned down our neighborhood park a few years prior.
The dude was SCARY...but I couldn't show weakness in front of the team so I grabbed a few of the best cards and headed out to make the SALE!
This went just about as you would expect..
I knocked on the door...
Mark answered the door....
I said Would you like to buy an I Love You card???
He said Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Then I screamed fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck (for the first time)
and I tucked my mullet between my legs and took the hell off!
Lesson learned: Mark did NOT represent our Ideal Client Avatar.
Later on I figured out that Grandma's were our ICA....
and they would buy ALL of our cards.
We eventually also learned that we had to align the topic of the cards with the time of year and the correct holiday...LOL.
We were a bunch of silly little 8 year olds.....BUT....many fully grown ass entrepreneurs are making this same mistake.
You aren't making sales because:
👉 1. You are selling to the WRONG audience.
OR
👉 2. You have not clearly defined WHO your ideal client is.
So...let's work on fixing this!
I recently ran my group coaching clients through an exercise where we got as SPECIFIC as possible on who our ideal client avatar is.
Here is what my level progression of my ICA looks like:
✔️ Level One: People that are thinking about starting a podcast.
✔️ Level Two: People who have launched a podcast and want to grow it.
✔️ Level Three: People who are online business owners that want to use their podcast to get clients.
✔️ Level Four: (This is where I got REALLY specific)..
People who:
-Have at least 20 podcast episodes.
-Have an email list of at least 100 people.
-Have an online business and have successfully sold at least one program or service for over $500.
Now, if you are someone that meets my Level Four ICA criteria it just means that you are the person that I can get results for the FASTEST.
You are my slam dunk, home run client...and I have to make sure I do a damn good job of attracting YOU into my world with my free content.
Now here are the questions that I know are in your head right now:
Adam, what about the OTHER people?
Are you saying you will only work with the Level Four people now?
Glad you asked!
I see it as my job to BUILD all of you into becoming my best ICA.
I do this with my free content like my podcast and this newsletter... and also with my offers.
I have a lot of people that start off at level one or two and I build them up into level four and that is when the momentum explodes!
Let's wrap this up with some action steps for you:
✅ 1. Take some time to think about the client that you can help the FASTEST. Get as specific as possible when describing them.
✅ 2. Are you attracting these specific people into your world with your content (podcast, newsletter, social media)?
✅ 3. What specific PROBLEMS does your ideal client avatar have?
✅ 4. Are you leveraging your content to prove to them that you are a SOLVER of these problems?
✅ 5. Look at the opportunity that exists for the potential ideal fit clients in your audience. Are you helping them evolve into your ICA with your content and offers?
