Hey Pod Pals!
This newsletter was lovingly curated (without the use of any AI) in real time on Thursday morning at 8:33am CST.
I've already made breakfast, dropped my son off at football practice, and taken a nice walk outside in the sunshine......now I'm soaking up my cold brew coffee mojo and I'm ready to write!
This week's newsletter is being sponsored by ME! ⤵️

This week we are going to talk about strategies to help you improve your podcast subscriber retention rate.
As podcasters we are all ultra focused on acquiring NEW listeners but many times we forget that a huge part of podcast audience growth is the ability to keep our current listeners subscribed and listening to our show.
It's kind of like the business advice that we've all heard about how it's easier and more lucrative to retain a current client than it is to go out and acquire a new one.
We all work REALLY hard to build our audience, so today I'm going to dish out three of my go-to strategies for subscriber retention!
🎯 Strategy One: Use your social media marketing as a tool to give your current audience members a reason to check out each weekly episode.
Many of us get lost in the social media vortex of:
➡️ 1. Creating trendy content to hopefully attract new audience members.
➡️ 2. Putting content out about our newest episode that is heavy on PROMO and low on VALUE.
Instead of doing the above I want you to spend some focused social media marketing time creating content that is the appetizer to your podcast content.
When you post content on social media it should add value to the point where the content consumer is hungry for more.
I love putting together long form SuperThreads on the Threads platform that dish out a ton of value about the topic of my weekly episode...and then at the very end I invite them to check out the episode.....like THIS post.
➡️ Now let's talk about how this all works within my 72 Hour Rule Strategy.
With this strategy I teach my clients how to create FIVE unique episode promotion assets within the first 72 hours of their episode being released.
This 72 hour window is critical in the world of audio podcasts especially.
If you can create a bolus of activity (people downloading, listening, subscribing) within the first 72 hours of an episode being live...then the app is much more likely to share your show via SEO/Organic Discovery.
So the ultimate use of this first strategy is to:
✅ 1. Create five unique promotional assets to use across social media (and email) within 72 hours of each episode release. (Think Threads posts, Carousels, videos, etc).
✅ 2. Make sure that each of these five unique promo assets is an appetizer for the episode.
These assets should NOT have the vibe of "Hey y'all new episode just dropped...it's super awesome.....go get it!"
🎯 Strategy Two: Give your listeners an opportunity to be a part of your show.
If you can pull off this strategy it will really make your show stand out...because hardly any podcasters are doing this!
📌 One of my favorite super simple ways to do this is to collect audio clips from my listeners. I use the free version of SpeakPipe which allows my audience to easily create and send me audio clips.
I love collecting audience questions that I can turn into an episode and when an audience member hears their voice on your show and you do an entire episode answering their question......you have just created a new SuperFan!
📌 I also use SpeakPipe to collect client testimonials, which I play at the beginning of each episode. This is another way for some of my highest value listeners (my paying clients) to hear their voice on my show!
📌 Another fun way to make your audience a part of your show is to host a community podcast episode recording. I do this with my Pod Pals Zoom Parties.
The basic structure looks like this:
✅ I teach on a specific topic for about 15 mins.
✅ We do open Q&A/discussion on that topic for another 15-20 mins.
✅ We do Podcaster Speed Dating with the remaining time. Everyone gets 60 seconds to shout out their show and mention who they are looking for as a podcast guest and who they would be a great guest for.
📌 Lastly...my favorite way to bring my audience onto my show is with my Podcast Audit episodes. I'm obviously a HUGE fan of the coaching podcast episode format as it is a simple way to create another new SuperFan with each session.
🎯 Strategy Three: Stop sitting back and waiting for audience engagement to happen and start initiating it.
If you actively reach out to your audience (podcast listeners, email list, and social media followers) you WILL stand out...period!
Here is my favorite way to do this:
➡️ Go to your favorite social media platform and find the ten people that most recently followed you.
Send them a quick message to thank them for following you and ask them what pain point they are focusing on solving right now....I really prefer to do this via VOICE direct message so that they know it wasn't a bot that messaged them.
My voice message is usually something like this: "Hey XYZ this is Adam from Podcasting Business School. I just wanted to say thanks for following me here on PLATFORM. When you get a second, message me back and let me know where you are feeling stuck with your podcasting journey. I've got about 600 episodes and I will find a couple to send over that might be helpful! Have a great DAY OF THE WEEK!"
Now I know what some of you are thinking: This is unscalable and it will take a lot of time to do this!
My answer: EXACTLY....and this is how you build an army of loyal audience members...especially if you are starting off with a small audience anyway!
As we bring this deep dive home I want to sum it up with this thought:
➡️ It is a BIG deal when someone hits that Follow/Subscribe button on your show....treat it as such.
If you put just as much effort into keeping your current podcast listeners listening as you do with finding new listeners....you will have the potential to become the people's champion within your podcasting niche!

🤩 Client testimonial of the week: My client Jan Ditchfield has a show called the Business Of Good.
Check out what she has to say about working with me:
"Before I started working with Adam, I was caught in the post-launch frustration zone. I couldn't figure out how to make my podcast grow, and it certainly wasn't making me any sales. Within 3 weeks of working with Adam, I doubled my downloads and brought an additional $6,500 in revenue into my business....from my podcast!!!"
