business tips email list building May 14, 2026

    Hey Pod Pals!

This newsletter was lovingly curated (without the use of any AI) in real time on Thursday morning at 8:28am CST.

Yesterday I was scrolling through my Threads notifications and I noticed that the podcaster behind one of the most famous podcasts in the world (with almost one BILLION downloads) had shared one of my posts....

But there was a BIG problem....

They shared my post and then went on to say that I was giving terrible advice!!!! 😱😱😱😱

This story is too long (and interesting!) to tell in a newsletter intro, so I will have to leave you with a cliff hanger until my bonus newsletter on Monday where I will unpack the entire story!

Keep your eyes on your inbox!

👉 One last quick thing before we get started with today's newsletter: I'm hosting another free Content Collaboration session next Wednesday.

I'd love to have you join me if you are either looking for podcast guests or looking to be a guest on other podcasts.

This week we are going to talk about: Why you need an effective Podcast + Newsletter strategy.

I'd like to kick things off today by stating how excited I am that so many of you are starting newsletters!

For those of you that are still on the fence about starting a weekly newsletter here is a great BIG selling point:

➡️ Way more people buy directly from my newsletter than from my podcast.

    WHY?

Let's consider the way you consume a podcast vs a newsletter:

🎧 When you listen to my show you are most likely doing something else at the same time like exercising, doing the dishes, or sitting on a park bench feeding the pigeons.

This form of media consumption is not conducive to making a sale.

📰 Now when you are reading my newsletter....you usually aren't multi-tasking AND you are looking at a SCREEN....

and we all love to click on things and buy stuff when we are looking at a screen!

Now that I've convinced you even further that having a Podcast + Newsletter strategy is a great idea...

Let's talk about how to not screw this thing up!

👉 Here's the first big mistake that podcasters make with a newsletter:

❌ Your newsletter cannot just be one giant promo email for your latest podcast episode.

If your weekly newsletter does not contain VALUE, your subscribers will not open it.

Before hitting send you must ask yourself this question:

What are my readers getting out of this email?

They don't need a giant reminder that your latest greatest episode is now live.

Now...that being said....we can still do a gentle promo of your latest episode. Take note of what I do below in this very email!

The rule is that the email cannot ONLY be about promoting the latest episode.

👉 Here's the second big mistake that podcasters make with a newsletter:

❌ Your newsletter should NOT be on the same topic as your podcast episode from that same week.

I realize that I just broke many of your brains with this one! LOL

Right now I'd like you to think about our dream scenario as a content creator:

We want our audience to want to consume BOTH our weekly podcast episode AND our weekly newsletter.

If they are on the exact same topic this will NOT happen. This is why so many of you have a sub 30% open rate on your emails....

people aren't opening them because there is no incentive to open them!

Now I fully realize that I just added some work to your plate. I'm asking you to create unique content for both your podcast and your newsletter every week.

I hate to say it but...here's a little tough love:

😱 Creating content is a part of the job description of being a Content Creator.

One quick strategy that helps me a lot is my Content Flywheel.

Here's a quick run through of what I do:

✔️ 1. I create an audio only podcast episode.

✔️ 2. I wait about 3 months and then I take my notes from that podcast episode and I use them to inspire a newsletter.

Example: I used my notes from episode 605 to write this newsletter. That episode came out on January 20th, 2026.

Now if you go back and listen to episode 605 you will notice that the podcast episode and this newsletter are not exactly the same.

My audio content tends to be more about quick thoughts and tips. With my newsletter I like to dive a little deeper on a few key things.

I hope that today's newsletter was been worth the time that you are investing in consuming it!

🤩 Client Testimonial of the week: My client Jan Ditchfield has a show called No BS Business School.

Check out what she has to say about doing 1:1 consulting with me:

"Before I started working with Adam, I couldn't figure out how to make my podcast grow, and it certainly wasn't making me any sales. Within three weeks of working with Adam, I doubled my downloads and brought an additional $6,500 in revenue into my business. One of the best decisions I've ever made in my business has been working with Adam."
